Conversion of existing 1920’s bungalow to substantial house.

The client, owned a small two bedroom bungalow which had been extended some twelve years before.  The detached property stands on a large plot with long distance views up towards Durdham Downs.

The client wanted to convert this into a four bedroom two storey house linked to the adjacent garage but without losing the ambience of the original structure. In the discussion, despite the apparent economic considerations, demolition of the existing bungalow in entirety was rejected by the client in favour of wrapping a new building around the old structure creating a new dwelling in the ‘art deco’ style.

This would resulted in the ground floor rooms retaining almost all of their original fittings and additional doors and fittings of the period of the period were sourced for the new first floor. The project involved underpinning the original foundations and providing entirely new storm and foul drainage as well as new electrical and heating services throughout.
